We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and the buiness/work related side of our life can be found on our secondary channel "Josh and Erin- The After Show". Here you will see us renovating our Cafe, opening/operating the Cafe with goods from our farm, building/furnishing/running our short term rentals, finding/operating our other real estate investments and more. I hate to be the "JERK" who brings politics into this video. I normally would not do it but feel compelled to do so. Please hear me out. I have been watching this channel since the camper days maybe had a couple handful of subscribers and was doing it on an iphone those videos you could sense their desire to achieve their dreams and willing to do whatever work it took. I was nervous for them especially when Josh quit his electrical job and especially with a young family of 3. All long term subscribers and new ones that have gone back to the start can attest to the fact this family worked for what they got literally put in the blood, sweat and tears. Now for the political part: It's come to my attention that Kamala and Walz have both said they would give those who have worked hard to get what they got to those who do not have or work hard for. A lot more has been said and those are extreme ideas basically they believe in and would enforce "equitable distribution and treatment" I'll keep it at that. I just could not under any circumstances vote for them out of fear this family could lose what they worked for and continue to work for let alone any other family or myself for that matter.

    Hello, I am a licensed General Contractor and a Civil Engineer in AZ. I worked my way through college as a framing contractor. I have two important suggestions to help you: 1. The framing project of your home's roof is extremely difficult, complicated and dangerous. I applaud your courage, work ethic and success to no end. Having said this, I think you would have been ahead to hire a local framing company to build the roof portion of your project. Now that you are nearly complete, this is hindsight "armchair" quarterbacking. But if you have future projects, I would ask you to keep this in mind. Frame carpenters spend years developing the strength, the skill, the balance and the knowledge to build complex conventionally framed roofs like this. Please don't take this as a criticism because I have nothing but respect and praise for your effort here. 2. It is VERY important that you install midspan blocks on between your roof rafters. Not only does code require it, it is necessary to ensure the strength of the structure of your room during high-wind, storm events like tornados. Remember here that I am a Civil Engineer who has done structural engineering. When a tornado contacts your roof, the uplift force on the rafter structure is incredible. The only thing that causes the roof to stay in place is the mechanical series of metal strapping that connects the roof to the second floor, the second floor to the first floor, and the first floor to your concrete pylon foundation. An EF 4 or EF 5 tornado has more than enough force to lift your entire house up into the sky if it is not anchored to the foundation. It appears that you have anchored your structure with strapping which is good. But another force comes into play when you are hit with a tornado. When a structure that is anchored to the foundation is hit with a tornado, their are powerful "twisting forces." The tornado will try to twist the house to weaken it. This is were midspan blocking between your roof rafters becomes critical. If you have midspan blocking, as the tornado tries to twist the roof structure, the roof will act as one unified unit. The midspan blocks will absorb the incredible torque that the winds are applying to the roof and wedge the roof into one solid structure that won't twist. Without the blocking, as huge forces are applied to the roof, the long rafters will start to twist under the roof sheathing. As they twist, they weaken, and the roof begins to separate. This can cause catastrophic failure, and that is why IBC and structural codes require midspan blocking on all conventional roofs, even flat roofs. I strongly encourage you to install the midspan blocking now while it is accessible and easy to do so. It will only take a couple of hours, and it could save your family's lives in a catastrophic storm event. Keep in mind that tornados can come at night while you are asleep, so it will take time for you to move your family into your concrete storm shelter. Installing midspan blocking will buy you precious time to save your family's lives if an EF 4 or 5 tornado hits your home.

      Hi Frank- Thanks for taking the time to comment! We have been working on I stalling blocking as we move along the build. So far we've only finished two sections but we will continue adding it in as we move along 😊

    • @franklong6269
      @franklong6269 2 дні тому

      @@WildWonderfulOffGrid Thank you for your response. I am very happy to hear this because it could save your family's life. One other quick note. Now would be the best time to install the midspan blocking, I will communicate why. Professional framing carpenters use the midspan blocking to straighten the long roof rafters on a conventional roof. This makes it MUCH easier for the drywall contractors to install drywall on the underside of the rafters, or if you are installing a wood ceiling, it will make your job much easier. Straightening the roof rafters helps virtually every other trade that follows in the construction schedule, including plumbers, HVAC installers, trim carpenters and electricians. Crooked roof rafters can cause a litany of finish and installation problems later on and using midspan blocks to straighten them is a fairly quick and easy solution. I can't wait to see your finished home. It's going to be stunning!
